        Task 2A : Key Artwork
        Task 2B : Collateral

LECTURES

All lectures are in task 1

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2A : Key Artwork

For this task, you can use the initial letters of your name or your full name, i.e., Onn Aditya Hussein, OAH, OA. Explore and compose as many permutations and combinations of these initials. The final key artwork must be an elegant solution, not complicated or confusing that leads to a functional and communicable key artwork. This key artwork will subsequently be used in Task 2(B) on various collateral.

Ideation and Sketches :
I want to be a person who always show happiness to other people surrounding me. I personally love the coquette and y2k trends and thinking of making it into my key artwork. For my personality, I am a person who are messy but I don't want to show people that, so I'm going to put elegancy in the artwork. On my key artwork, I put fun and bubbly for the keyword.

Digitalization :
fig 1.3 1st attempt of digitalization

After receiving feedback from Mr.Vinod, I change my digitalization and make it looks more appealing. Here is the result :
fig 1.4 2nd attempt of digitalization

Mr.Vinod said it was okay but need to rethink of the C letter, so I reduce the 'tail' of the C letter and here is the final result :
fig 1.5 3rd attempt of digitalization

After printing it on A4 paper, I need to do some adjustment for the letters, the spacing of each letters need to be the same, and Mr. Vinod also suggested me to reduce the size of the R so it don't look so heavy. And here is the result :

Choosing colors :
Here is the color palette I wanted to use on my key artwork :

And I try to use it to my text :

I think the colors match with the name, I personally like the top right and bottom left more because it shows more contrast.

Task 2B : Collateral

Instruction:
- Apply the key artwork on collateral (T-shirt, pins, stickers, etc.)
- Expand the key artwork with relevant designs
- Create an Instagram account and post the key artwork & collateral, plan the layout

First, I try to expand my artwork to make it a pattern. I am thinking to expand the 'tail' of the letter R and make repeat it. Here is the result :
fig 3.1 Wordmark (01/06/2024)

I kinda like how it turns out, I make it repetitive. Then, I try to put it in some of the product that I find out like t-shirt, tote bag, etc.
fig 3.2 Mockups (01/06/2024)

I found some of them are interesting, but some of them didn't work, so I make another collateral to it. Here is the grid result :

After receiving feedback from Mr.Vinod, I try to expand my word mark to a word, and here is the result.

fig 3.4 Expansion (05/06/2024)

I think this is interesting so I try to expand it and add color to it.

fig 3.5 Expansion with color (05/06/2024)

As for the picture of myself, Mr.Vinod said it must be in a white background, so I changed it and make intertwine to the letters.

Then, I add in my word mark to the center of my face just to make it not really having a big space. Here is the result :

Next, for the tote bag, Mr.Vinod said it didn't work like that, so I changed it into the word that I just created.

And here is the final grid of my collateral :

FEEDBACKS

Week 5
General Feedback : Do not use negative word mark because we don't want client to see that.
Specific Feedback : The negative part is too much, need to look at more references.

Week 6
General Feedback : Readability is important, think of the keyword.
Specific Feedback : It looks okay, but need to rethink of the C shape.

Week 7
General Feedback : There’s so many things you can bring together, you can use colors, pattern, word mark, words
Specific Feedback : pattern not fine, the pattern can be expand and change into a word maybe, the t-shirt is plain and fine, the pattern on the phone case is fine, the picture need to have white plain background

REFLECTION

Experience
Working on this task has been personally enjoyable for me because I've learned how to create a key artwork and word mark. This experience has shown me that transforming key artwork into a recognizable word mark is more challenging than I initially thought. It's essential to understand the techniques required to make key artwork stand out and be memorable to people.

Observation
I observed that everyone has unique ideas when creating their own key artwork. Seeing the diverse range of designs from different individuals has taught me that there are numerous design approaches to explore.

Findings
Through this project, I discovered the critical importance of readability in design. It's essential that our key artwork communicates clearly without needing to explain it individually to people. Effective design must convey its message at a glance, making it accessible and easily understood by a wide audience. The process involves more than just creativity; it requires strategic thinking and a deep understanding of visual communication principles.

FURTHER READINGS

fig 7.1 Typographic design : Form and Communication

I read this book to help me with my task 2.

fig 7.2 Type Size (pg 52-53)

When considering the legibility of a typeface, the thickness (weight) of the strokes should be examined. A typeface that is too light or too heavy has diminished legibility. Light typefaces cannot be easily distinguished from their background, while a typeface that is too heavy has a tendency to lose its internal pattern of counterforms.

fig 7.3 Legibility and Colors (pg 56-57)

Using color in typography greatly influences readability, with the primary goal being to ensure sufficient contrast between the text and its background. The level of readability required is determined by the designer's intentions and the content's nature. Traditionally, black text on a white background is considered the most readable. Although this remains a solid choice, advancements in digital and printing technologies now allow other combinations to potentially offer better readability due to the relative nature of color. When applying color to text, it should be assessed in relation to the reading conditions. For print, factors like the type and quality of paper (whether it's a warm or cool white, rough or smooth, coated or uncoated) should be considered, along with the typeface and its size.
