INSTRUCTIONS

Proposal
fig 1.1 Proposal

Chosen Idea :
Second Idea : Completing Bratz font.
I choose this idea because I think this font is unique and I think it's fun for me to complete it. First, I observe the font and see what is the trades of it, looking at the curves, and what make it unique. I found out that the unique part is there is sharp edges, also not a straight line in one of the stroke.

Sketch
First, I do some rough sketch for some of the letters, and then I do the digitalization.

Digitalization

fig 2.2 Digitalization 2 (20/06/2024)

For my first attempt, I didn't do any grid base so the letters didn't look consistent. After receiving feedback from Mr.Vinod, I then do the grid base and start designing my letter again.
fig 2.3 Base Grid Structure (26/06/2024)

I use an existing font, and reshape it according to my grid, but I don't think that method works well, so my letter come out not really nice.

Here is the full version of the letters :

Then, I started to make the lowercase letter with different grid base. Here is the base :

Then, I also create some shape to ensure its consistent.
fig 3.2 Base shape for lowercase (29/06/2024)

And this is the result of the lowercase letter :
fig 3.3 Lowercase letters attempt (29/06/2024)

I think my lowercase letter is much more consistent than the uppercase letter.

Then, after getting feedback from Mr.Vinod, he asked me to have a base structure first, then slowly build the letters. He also showed me tutorial to do it. Here is the base structure :
fig 4.1 Structure (03/07/2024)

Then, for the numbers part, I also use the base structure from the capital letters.
fig 4.2 Attempt of doing numbers (04/07/2024)

And here is the result :
fig 4.3 Final Result before combining the shapes (05/07/2024)

For the lowercase letter, I didn't change much from my previous attempt since I think it's already consistent. After I watch the instagram video Mr.Vinod posted to help us to make the punctuation, I then try to make it. For the '!' and '?' I use the base shapes from capital letters.

Here is the overall result :

Here is the result after combining the shapes :

Then, I import the letters to font lab.

Next, I adjust the left and right bearings.
fig 5.2 Adjust side bearings (10/07/2024)

After importing to font lab, I notice that there are some letters that is not consistent like the lowercase letter c and s, so I go back to illustrator and adjust the thickness of the letters. Here is the final result :

Font Presentation and Font Application
First I do the font presentation, I first find reference from Pinterest before doing it.

Then, Mr.Vinod suggest to have a fix color palette so I use green, pink, black and white for my font presentation and application.

FEEDBACK

Week 13 :
General Feedback :
Need to use square artboard, need to finish the font application and presentation
Week 12 : General Feedback : For the font presentation and font application, set the color pallete so it is easier. For font application, can start from thinking what problem are you solving then make the application.

Week 11 :
Specific Feedback : The capital letter is not consistent, need to make the base letter first than put in other elements.

Week 10 :
General Feedback : All the letters need to be consistent, use the grid behind to make it easier.
Specific Feedback : The letters didn't look like its coming from the same mom and dad, need to re-do the letters.

Week 9 :
General Feedback : From the proposal that we have already proposed, we should choose the one that we want to do and need to have grid behind the letters we want to construct.

Week 8 : Independent Learning Week

REFLECTION

Experience
Creating a font can be quite stressful due to the meticulous nature of the task. Each letter must be crafted individually, which requires significant time and attention to detail. Ensuring consistency across all letters adds to the challenge, as does considering the problem we aim to solve with the font design.

Observation
Throughout the exercise, I observed that there are various approaches to creating fonts. We can construct complete fonts from letters we find, integrate illustrative elements into the letters, or address specific problems related to typography, such as redesigning a movie poster font.

Findings
I discovered that creativity alone is not enough for this task. Maintaining consistency across all letters, both uppercase and lowercase, is crucial. Additionally, it is essential to ensure that the font meets the intended design and functional requirements.

FURTHER READINGS

The shape of period is related to the dot on the I, but slightly bigger. A round period has slightly less overshot than the O. A period should be large enough to indicate a pause in the text.
The comma is roughly the height of two stacked periods, the comma head should be slightly smaller than the period. The downstroke terminal's angle could be related to the angle in the S.
