LECTURES

Visual analysis identifies and explores characteristics of example material and relationships within the context in which they were produced and encountered. The purpose of visual analysis is to make an argument based on visual evidence. There are three parts to writing a visual analysis:

  • Observation : Identify the necessary information on the work of art.
  • Analysis : Describe what the painting represents, summarizing all the visible aspects of the piece, painting the image in the reader's mind.
  • Interpretation : Analyzing the elements, context, and relationships within the visual content to understand its message.

INSTRUCTIONS

In this task, we are asked to evaluating, exploring, recording, and scrutinizing the chosen art/design piece from Task 1. You'll delve into the design fundamentals present in the piece, alongside its dimensions, positioning, intent, and efficacy concerning the UNSDG objective you've opted for.

From those 17 goals of UNSDG, the one I found out really interesting for me is the number 14 goal, which is life below water. This goal is about taking care of our oceans, seas, and marine life. It's important because oceans provide food, regulate the climate, and support many livelihoods. The goal aims to protect marine life, manage fishing responsibly, create safe zones for marine animals, and reduce pollution. By working together, we can keep our oceans healthy for everyone.

Design :

figure 1.1 Mother River Saves Life Source

Phase 1 : Observation

The design is in a portrait form. In the center of the art, there is a woman, cradles the Earth in her arms, representing our responsibility for the ocean. Around her, a diverse array of sea animals flock. There are dolphins, whales, octopus, and fish. As we can see in the top right corner, a lot of rubbish litters the ocean floor. For the visual elements, the main colors used in this design is blue. In addition, there are lots of swirly lines in this design evident on the woman hair as well as the water. (96 words)

Phase 2 : Analysis

This artwork employs the golden ratio in its composition, as what we can see this applies at the animals and the woman incorporating proportions that are aesthetically pleasing to the viewer’s eye and creating a balance. All of the sea creatures flow towards the center, creating a sense of movement in the composition. Also, when you take a closer look at the design, you’ll notice many fish that look alike and have the same colors, although they might be different shades. This repetition happens throughout the artwork. All the elements in this artwork work together in harmony, reflecting the underwater theme. The colors used throughout the artwork also match, adding to the overall feeling of unity. (116 words)

Phase 3 : Interpretation

This artwork is part of a competition titled "Inspiring Ocean Conservation Through Art." It aims to encourage young artists to raise awareness about endangered marine animals and why it's important to protect the oceans. These artworks aren't just pretty they make people think about how we affect the environment. The competition hopes to teach students worldwide about why we need to care for the ocean and inspire them to speak up for it (Amy Heemsoth, 2023)This artwork contest is really important for making more people aware of endangered ocean animals.
